L’incontro, che si è svolto nel Refettorio dell’Arcivescovado, ha avuto inizio alle 10.00 [ore 10.00 locali – 04.30 ora di Roma] e si è concluso alle 10.40. Durante l’incontro il Santo Padre si è rivolto ai presenti a braccio, parlando in spagnolo.
Dopo il saluto e l’introduzione del vescovo John Hsane Hgyi, tutti i leader religiosi presenti – buddisti, musulmani, hindu, ebrei, cristini (anglicani e cattolici) – hanno parlato brevemente. Nel corso del colloquio il tema centrale è stato quello dell’unità nella diversità.

Dopo l’incontro con i leader religiosi e prima della celebrazione della Santa Messa in privato, il Papa ha incontrato brevemente il leader buddhista, Sitagou Sayadaw. Il Direttore della Sala Stampa, Greg Burke, ha dichiarato che rappresenta lo sforzo di incoraggiare la pace e la convivenza fraterna come unica via da percorrere.
